Michelangelo: The Last Judgment

Medieval depictions of the Last Judgment normally indicated figures dressed according to their social rank with Christ, the Virgin Mary, and Apostles enthroned in heaven. Michelangelo broke with this tradition. He shows three hundred figures, mostly naked, grouped around the figure of Christ who is standing, and muscular, as judge. The figures surrounding Christ are part of a wheel of fortune: some rise from their graves, others sink downward to Hell. Angels are shown without wings or halos. Michelangelo included himself as St. Bartholomew. The Virgin Mary is by Christ's side as he blesses some and damns others.
