Directions:  Read Chapter Three: Classical Civilization: India  in your textbook and answer the following inquiries in complete sentences.  Your responses must be either typewritten double spaced, or neatly written in blue or black ink. Responses written in pencil or odd colored inks will not be accepted.  You may email your responses if wish at your own risk, but you are responsible whether your responses are received or not.

Part One:

1.       How did geography and environment influence Indian civilization?

2.      Describe the Hindu political hierarchy, caste structure, and gender relations.

3.      What did Buddha teach and how did Buddhism challenge Hinduism?

4.      What were the intellectual accomplishments of the Mauryas and the Guptas?

5.      How did Hinduism respond to the various changes of Buddhism?

Part Two: Examine the Maps India in the Time of Ashoka (Map 3.2)  and The Gupta Empire (pages 54-55) and answer the following inquiries:

1.       What areas were the cores of Ashoka’s state and the Gupta Empire?

2.      Which areas remained outside Mauryan and Gupta control?

3.      What might this have meant for the development of culture?
